ἔννομος G1772
lawful, legal, subject to law; according to law or bound by legal requirements
The term describes what is according to law—either lawful actions or persons under law's authority. Paul tells the Corinthians he is not outside God's law but under Christ's law (1 Cor 9:21). In Acts, leaders say lawful matters should be settled in the regular assembly, not a riot (Acts 19:39). The word carries both positive (legitimate, proper) and descriptive (subject to law) senses. Classical usage included legal assemblies, lawful ages or times, and persons living uprightly within legal bounds.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Lawful, legal, according to law; subject to or bound by law. In Acts 19:39, the town clerk says lawful matters (ἐννόμῳ ἐκκλησίᾳ) should be settled in the legal assembly, not through riot. In 1 Cor 9:21, Paul describes himself as not lawless before God but under law (ἔννομος) to Christ—subject to Christ's law though free from Mosaic law. Classical usage includes legitimate assemblies, just actions, and persons keeping within law. Translations render both 'lawful' and 'under law' senses. 2×
