fall into, fall among
1. fall into, fall among To fall into a place, situation, or condition, always with the preposition eis or a dative implying entry into an undesirable state. All NT occurrences share this single core meaning -- the six auto-split clusters are purely inflectional variants (aorist subjunctive empese, aorist participle empesontos, future indicative empesountai, aorist infinitive empesein, present indicative empiptousin). In Matt 12:11, a sheep 'falls' (empese) into a pit on the Sabbath. In Luke 6:39, the blind leading the blind 'will both fall' (empesountai) into a ditch. The Good Samaritan parable features a man who 'fell among' (empesontos) robbers (Luke 10:36). In 1 Tim 3:6-7, the overseer must not fall into the devil's condemnation or snare (empese). Those who desire to be rich 'fall into' (empiptousin) temptation and a trap (1 Tim 6:9). Heb 10:31 warns it is fearful 'to fall into' (empesein) the hands of the living God. Hebrew glosses uniformly use yippol/lippol (qal of naphal 'fall'); Arabic yasqutu/suqut; Hindi girna/gire; Korean ppajida/tteoreojida; Spanish caer/caera/cayere.
