doma -- a gift, something given; an act of giving or a thing bestowed
Doma denotes a gift or thing given, derived from the verb didomi ('to give'). It is closely related to doron (G1435) and dorema (G1434), but doma tends to emphasize the concrete thing bestowed rather than the act of giving. Jesus argues from the lesser to the greater: if earthly fathers know how to give good gifts (domata) to their children, how much more will the heavenly Father give good things -- or the Holy Spirit -- to those who ask (Matt 7:11; Luke 11:13). Paul quotes Psalm 68:18 in Ephesians 4:8: the ascended Christ 'gave gifts (domata) to people.' In Philippians 4:17 Paul uses it for the Philippians' financial gift. Spanish dones, French don, and German Gabe all render it consistently as 'gift.'
Senses
1. sense 1 — A gift or thing bestowed, emphasizing the concrete item given rather than the abstract act of giving. Jesus employs this word in his a fortiori argument about the Father's generosity: if flawed human parents give good domata to their children, how much more the heavenly Father (Matt 7:11; Luke 11:13). Paul quotes Ps 68:18 in Eph 4:8, declaring that the ascended Christ distributed domata to his people -- spiritual gifts for the building up of the church. Spanish dones and French don confirm a single undifferentiated sense of 'gift, thing given.' 4×
