To scatter or disperse widely; of people or flocks driven apart, or of wealth squandered through reckless spending.
Built on the root σκορπίζω (scatter) with the intensifying prefix δια- (through, throughout), this verb paints vivid pictures of violent dispersal. When Jesus quotes Zechariah — 'I will strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered' (Matt 26:31; Mark 14:27) — the multilingual evidence is unanimous: Spanish 'dispersados,' French 'disperser,' German 'zerstreut.' But Luke twice repurposes this physical scattering as a metaphor for financial ruin: the prodigal son 'scattered' his inheritance (Luke 15:13), and the unjust steward was accused of 'squandering' his master's goods (Luke 16:1), where Spanish shifts tellingly to 'malgastando' (wasting).
2. squander, waste To squander or waste possessions through reckless, profligate spending — a metaphorical extension of physical scattering. The prodigal son 'scattered' his property in dissolute living (Luke 15:13), and the dishonest manager was charged with 'squandering' his master's wealth (Luke 16:1). The Spanish shift from 'dispersar' to 'malgastar' (to waste) neatly captures this semantic extension: what was once about bodies flung apart now describes money thrown away.

Senses
1. scatter, disperse To scatter or disperse people, animals, or groups in multiple directions, whether by divine judgment, persecution, or circumstance. Used of the sheep scattered when the shepherd is struck (Matt 26:31; Mark 14:27), God scattering the proud (Luke 1:51), the gathered children of God who were scattered (John 11:52), and Theudas's followers dispersing after his death (Acts 5:37). Spanish consistently uses 'dispersar/esparcir' and German 'zerstreuen,' both emphasizing forceful separation into many directions.
