διαλογ-ισμός G1261
Thought, reasoning, deliberation; also dispute, argument, or verbal contention between persons.
A noun derived from dialogizomai ('to reckon, reason through'), covering the full range from private inner reasoning to outward verbal dispute. Jesus frequently perceives the dialogismoi of people's hearts -- their hidden doubts, calculations, and hostile reasonings (Luke 5:22; 6:8). Paul warns that human reasonings become futile apart from God (Rom 1:21; 1 Cor 3:20). The word also surfaces in contexts of open quarreling: the disciples' argument about who was greatest (Luke 9:46) and Paul's exhortation to pray 'without arguments' (1 Tim 2:8). German 'Gedanken' and French 'pensée/raisonnement' neatly track the internal sense, while the Spanish oscillation between 'pensamientos' and 'razonamientos' mirrors the spectrum from private thought to reasoned contention.
Senses
1. thought, reasoning, deliberation — Inner thoughts, reasonings, or mental deliberations, including doubts and opinions that may remain unexpressed. Jesus reads the dialogismoi of the Pharisees' hearts (Luke 5:22; 6:8), and Mary is told that a sword will pierce her soul so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (Luke 2:35). Paul declares that the Lord knows the reasonings of the wise are futile (1 Cor 3:20) and that futile reasoning darkened pagan understanding (Rom 1:21). In Romans 14:1, it appears as 'disputes over opinions,' showing the boundary where private reasoning becomes communal friction. Matt 15:19 and Mark 7:21 place evil dialogismoi among the corruptions flowing from the heart. 10×

2. dispute, argument, controversy — An outward dispute, argument, or controversy between persons, often involving verbal contention or competitive rivalry. The disciples' argument about who was greatest (Luke 9:46-47) is the clearest instance, where Jesus perceives 'the dialogismos of their heart' -- an internal ranking that erupted into open debate. Philippians 2:14 urges doing all things 'without grumbling or arguments,' and 1 Timothy 2:8 calls for prayer 'without anger or disputes.' The transition from inner reasoning to interpersonal quarreling reflects the word's etymological connection to dialogue and dialectic exchange. 4×
