N-GNP  |  5× in 1 sense
Gomorrah; one of the cities of the plain destroyed by divine judgment, used as a byword for extreme wickedness.
The proper name of one of the cities of the Jordan plain destroyed along with Sodom by fire and sulfur (Gen 19). In the NT, it functions almost exclusively as an archetype of catastrophic divine judgment. Jesus invokes Sodom and Gomorrah to warn inhospitable cities that their fate will be worse (Matt 10:15; Mark 6:11). Paul quotes Isaiah's reference to Gomorrah regarding Israel's near-total destruction (Rom 9:29). Both Peter and Jude cite their overthrow as a warning example for the ungodly (2 Pet 2:6; Jude 1:7). The name is consistently transliterated across languages — 'Gomorra' in Spanish, German, and French — testifying to its universal recognition.

Senses
1. sense 1 The city of Gomorrah, destroyed by God alongside Sodom as an act of definitive judgment. Every NT occurrence pairs it with Sodom in contexts of warning: Jesus' commissioning discourse uses it as a standard of judgment against rejecting towns (Matt 10:15; Mark 6:11), Paul cites Isaiah 1:9 to show God's mercy in preserving a remnant (Rom 9:29), and the catholic epistles present the cities' fiery overthrow as a paradigmatic example for the ungodly (2 Pet 2:6; Jude 1:7). The Hebrew source name is Amorah, reflecting its Canaanite origin.
