Los gerasenos eran los habitantes de la region de Gerasa o Gergesa, situada en la orilla oriental del mar de Galilea. Las variantes textuales en los manuscritos evangelicos reflejan incertidumbre sobre la ubicacion precisa: algunos leen 'gadarenos', otros 'gergesenos' y otros 'gerasenos'. El sitio mas probable es Gergesa (la actual Kursi), directamente en la ribera oriental del lago, con laderas empinadas que descienden hasta el agua, lo cual coincide con los detalles topograficos del relato sobre los cerdos precipitandose por el despenadero. Era territorio predominantemente gentil, lo que explica la presencia de piaras de cerdos.
