Gennesaret, fertile plain on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee
Gennesaret was both a fertile plain and, by extension, a name for the lake itself (otherwise called the Sea of Galilee or Lake of Tiberias). The region was renowned in antiquity for its productivity and pleasant climate. The plain on the northwestern shore provided rich agricultural land. When the Gospels mention Jesus and the disciples landing 'at Gennesaret,' they refer to this distinctive coastal area. The name derives from Hebrew Kinnereth, itself possibly meaning 'harp-shaped' from the lake's contours.
