Galatia, a region and Roman province in central Asia Minor
Galatia refers to a territory in central Asia Minor originally settled by migrating Celtic (Gaulish) tribes in the third century BC, later incorporated into a larger Roman province. Paul founded churches there, addressing them in his Epistle to the Galatians (Gal 1:2) and organizing a collection among them (1 Cor 16:1). First Peter 1:1 includes Galatia among the provinces of the letter's recipients. In 2 Timothy 4:10, Crescens departs for Galatia (some manuscripts read 'Gallia,' i.e., France). French 'Galatie' and German 'Galatien' preserve the geographical name with minimal variation.

Senses
1. sense 1 The proper geographical name for a region in central Asia Minor, originally the homeland of settled Celtic tribes and later a Roman province encompassing a broader territory. Paul established congregations there (Gal 1:2), directed charitable collections among them (1 Cor 16:1), and a co-worker later traveled there (2 Tim 4:10). First Peter 1:1 addresses believers scattered across this province. French 'Galatie' and German 'Galatien' reflect the Greek Galatía with standard phonological adaptation.
