This compound adjective describes what is not made by human hands. At Jesus's trial, false witnesses claimed he said he would destroy the temple 'made with hands' and build another 'not made with hands' in three days (Mark 14:58). Paul contrasts earthly tents with the building from God, eternal in the heavens, 'not made by hands' (2 Cor 5:1). Colossians 2:11 speaks of circumcision 'not made by hands'—the spiritual putting off of flesh in Christ. The term distinguishes human craftsmanship from divine or spiritual reality.
