El adverbio ἀφόβως («sin temor») aparece tanto en sentido positivo como negativo en sus cuatro ocurrencias neotestamentarias. La profecía de Zacarías celebra servir a Dios «sin temor» todos los días de la vida (Lucas 1:74), una bendita libertad del terror. Pablo espera que Timoteo ministre en Corinto «sin temor» (1 Corintios 16:10), y los creyentes filipenses anuncian la palabra «intrépidamente» gracias al encarcelamiento de Pablo (Filipenses 1:14). Judas 1:12, sin embargo, oscurece el sentido: los falsos maestros participan «sin temor» en los ágapes, y su desvergüenza es señal de corrupción espiritual más que de santa audacia.
