fearlessly, without fear, boldly; acting with courage or, negatively, with reckless impudence
The adverb aphobos ('without fear') appears in both positive and negative lights across its four NT occurrences. Zechariah's prophecy celebrates serving God 'without fear' all one's days (Luke 1:74) — a blessed freedom from terror. Paul hopes Timothy will minister in Corinth 'without fear' (1 Cor 16:10), and the Philippian believers speak the word 'fearlessly' because of Paul's imprisonment (Phil 1:14). Jude 1:12, however, turns the word dark: false teachers feast 'without fear' at love-feasts, their shamelessness a mark of spiritual corruption rather than holy boldness. Spanish 'sin-temor' and French 'sans-crainte' uniformly render the adverb as 'without fear,' leaving context to determine whether this is courage or impudence.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Fearlessly, with bold confidence — serving or speaking without being paralyzed by fear. Zechariah's hymn envisions a life of worship 'without fear' of enemies (Luke 1:74); Paul desires that Timothy work among the Corinthians 'without fear' (1 Cor 16:10); and believers in Philippi proclaim the gospel 'fearlessly' (Phil 1:14). Spanish 'sin-temor' and German 'furchtlos' both convey holy boldness grounded in divine protection or calling. 4×
