Adj-AMP  |  1× in 1 sense
Faithless, covenant-breaking; refusing to honor agreements or keep commitments
Literally 'not bound by covenant,' this word described people who break agreements, violate treaties, or refuse to honor commitments they've made. In Greco-Roman culture built on patronage and reciprocal obligations, being 'without covenant' marked someone as fundamentally untrustworthy. Paul uses it in Romans to characterize pagan depravity—societies where promises mean nothing and no agreement holds.

Senses
1. sense 1 Romans 1:31 lists 'faithless' (Spanish 'sin pacto' = without pact, French 'sans alliance,' German 'treulos' = loyaltyless) among marks of humanity under God's wrath. The word describes covenant-breaking, promise-ignoring, treaty-violating behavior. In ancient cultures where agreements undergirded all social order, such faithlessness threatened civilization itself. Paul sees it as symptomatic of life without God—when divine covenant is rejected, all human covenants become unstable.
