Ἄρχων es el participio presente de ἄρχω ('gobernar') usado como sustantivo, y designa a cualquier persona que ejerce autoridad de gobierno. En los Evangelios abarca desde el principal de la sinagoga que suplica a Jesús que resucite a su hija (Mateo 9:18, 23), hasta Nicodemo, 'un principal de los judíos' (Juan 3:1), y el ominoso 'príncipe de los demonios' aplicado a Beelzebú (Mateo 9:34; 12:24). Jesús mismo habla de 'el príncipe de este mundo' siendo echado fuera (Juan 12:31; 14:30; 16:11), un uso que Pablo retoma con 'los gobernantes de este siglo que crucificaron al Señor de gloria' (1 Corintios 2:6-8). Hechos lo aplica a miembros del Sanedrín (4:5, 8, 26) y a magistrados romanos (16:19).
