El adjetivo ἀρχαῖος (archaios) describe lo que es antiguo, original o perteneciente a tiempos anteriores. Jesús lo emplea en el Sermón del Monte cuando dice: 'Oísteis que fue dicho a los antiguos' (Mt 5:21, 33), estableciendo su autoridad para cumplir y superar la enseñanza antigua de la Torá. Las multitudes especulan que 'uno de los antiguos profetas' ha resucitado (Lc 9:8, 19).
