This adjective describes something that cannot be spoken or expressed in words—either because it's beyond human language to capture, or because it's forbidden to divulge. Classical usage includes both things too sacred to speak (mystery rites, divine names) and things too immense to express (immeasurable distances, unspeakable glory). Paul uses it to describe the words he heard in paradise—things so sacred or transcendent that they cannot and must not be uttered by human tongue.
