Aretas (Nabatean king, father-in-law of Herod Antipas)
This is the Greek form of the name Aretas, referring to Aretas IV Philopatris, king of the Nabatean Arabs from about 9 BC to AD 40. He was the father of the wife Herod Antipas divorced to marry Herodias, which led to political tensions. His ethnarch (governor) controlled Damascus at one point, which explains Paul's reference to being pursued by Aretas's official. The Nabateans controlled important trade routes and their kingdom bordered Judea to the southeast.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 The personal name Aretas, referring to the Nabatean king. 2 Corinthians 11:32 recounts Paul's escape from Damascus: 'the ethnarch of King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me.' Spanish 'de Aretas,' French 'Arétas,' German 'Aretas,' English 'of Aretas.' Paul's reference situates his dramatic escape historically—the Nabatean king's official controlled Damascus during Paul's time there, making the city dangerous for the apostle. Aretas IV was a powerful Arabian monarch whose territory and influence extended to Damascus, explaining the pursuit of this troublesome Jewish convert.
