Areios Pagos -- the Areopagus; Mars Hill in Athens, the ancient court and its rocky summit
Areios Pagos ('Hill of Ares' or 'Mars Hill') denotes both the rocky prominence northwest of the Acropolis in Athens and the venerable council that met there. The term combines Areios ('of Ares/Mars,' the war god) with pagos ('rock, hill'). In Acts 17:19-22, where all four New Testament occurrences cluster, Paul is brought to the Areopagus to explain his teaching about Jesus and the resurrection. Whether this refers to the physical hill or a formal session of the Areopagus court is debated, but the Greek text uses both the locative ('on the Areopagus,' v. 22) and the directional sense ('to the Areopagus,' v. 19). French Areopage and Spanish Areios Pagos preserve the compound faithfully.

Senses
1. sense 1 The Areopagus (Areios Pagos, 'Hill of Ares'), referring to both the rocky hill northwest of the Athenian Acropolis and the ancient judicial council that convened there. All four NT occurrences appear in Acts 17:19-22, where Paul is brought before this body or to this location to present his message about the 'unknown God.' French Areopage and German Areopag both retain the classical name, while the dual reference in the passage (v. 19 directional, v. 22 locative) reflects the inseparable association of place and institution in Athenian civic life.
