push away, reject, repudiate
1. push away, reject, repudiate To push away, thrust aside, or reject, whether physically or metaphorically. All NT occurrences share the core sense of forceful repudiation: (1) God not having 'rejected' (ἀπώσατο) his people Israel (Rom 11:1-2, Paul's rhetorical question answered emphatically in the negative), (2) the Israelite who 'pushed away' Moses when he tried to intervene in a fight (Acts 7:27), (3) the Israelites in the wilderness who 'rejected' Moses and turned to idols (Acts 7:39), (4) Paul and Barnabas declaring that those in Pisidian Antioch who 'thrust away' the word of God judge themselves unworthy of eternal life (Acts 13:46), and (5) Hymenaeus and Alexander who 'rejected' a good conscience and shipwrecked their faith (1 Tim 1:19). Cross-linguistically uniform: Ger 'verstossen' (cast out), Fra 'repousser/rejeter,' Spa 'rechazar,' Arb 'rafada/dafa'ahu' (refused/pushed him), Heb 'hiddechah/dachah/dochim' (reject/push), Kor 'milchyeonaetda/beoriji' (pushed away/rejected), Hin 'tyag-diya/dhakela/thukrate.' Active, middle, and participial forms all express one unified sense of forceful rejection.
