1. reject, reject after examination — To reject after scrutiny or testing, to deem unfit or unworthy, to repudiate. All NT occurrences carry the same core sense of authoritative rejection. The dominant context is the quotation of Ps 118:22 (LXX 117:22) about 'the stone which the builders rejected' (Matt 21:42, Mark 12:10, Luke 20:17, 1 Pet 2:4,7), applied to Christ rejected by the Jewish leaders. The Synoptic passion predictions use it for the Son of Man being 'rejected' by elders, chief priests, and scribes (Mark 8:31, Luke 9:22, 17:25). Heb 12:17 describes Esau being 'rejected' when he sought the blessing. Cross-linguistically stable: Fra 'rejeter,' Spa 'desechar/rechazar,' Arb 'rafadahu,' Heb 'ma'asu' (the same root as Ps 118:22 in MT), Kor 'beorin/geobu-dangha,' Hin 'asvikrit/thukraya.'
