Este término técnico-administrativo denotaba el censo romano: un registro periódico de personas y propiedades para la organización tributaria y cívica. El griego clásico lo usaba ampliamente para registros, listas y declaraciones, pero en tiempos del Nuevo Testamento se refería específicamente a los empadronamientos imperiales ordenados por decreto. Lucas lo menciona dos veces, ambas veces anclando eventos evangélicos en historia datable: el censo bajo Quirinio que llevó a María y José a Belén, y el censo bajo Quirinio que provocó la revuelta de Judas el Galileo. Las glosas multilingües convergen en 'censo' y 'registro', reflejando la precisión burocrática del término.
