A compact adjective (a-nypokritos, literally 'un-acted') meaning free from pretense or play-acting. It modifies the most central Christian virtues: love must be 'without hypocrisy' (Rom 12:9), as must faith (1 Tim 1:5; 2 Tim 1:5) and wisdom from above (Jas 3:17). Spanish 'sin hipocresia' and French 'sans hypocrisie' beautifully preserve the alpha-privative structure. The word insists that the inner reality must match the outward profession -- a recurring concern in the apostolic letters.
