V-RPA-NMP  |  4× in 1 sense
to draw water from a well or vessel
All four NT occurrences of this verb appear in the Gospel of John in connection with water. At the wedding in Cana (John 2:8-9), servants draw water that has been transformed into wine. In Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman (John 4:7, 15), drawing water from Jacob's well becomes the occasion for a discourse on living water. The verb is straightforwardly practical — Spanish 'sacar,' French 'puiser,' and German 'schoepfen' all denote the everyday act of drawing water — yet John consistently places it in contexts where ordinary water points to something extraordinary.

Senses
1. sense 1 To draw water from a well, cistern, or vessel. A concrete, everyday action appearing exclusively in John's Gospel. At Cana, servants draw (and discover wine, John 2:8-9); at Sychar, the woman draws from Jacob's well (John 4:7, 15). The cross-linguistic evidence is unanimous — Spanish 'sacar,' French 'puiser,' German 'schoepfen,' English 'draw' — all pointing to a single sense of extracting liquid from a source. The theological weight comes not from multiple senses but from John's symbolic staging of this ordinary act.
