Anna (from Hebrew חָנָּה, 'grace' or 'favor') was an elderly prophetess who worshiped at the Jerusalem temple. Luke describes her in Luke 2:36-38 as recognizing the infant Jesus and testifying about him to those awaiting redemption. She was from the tribe of Asher, had been widowed after seven years of marriage, and was now 84 years old (or had been a widow for 84 years). Her extended temple service and prophetic gift positioned her to recognize the Messiah. All translation languages maintain the name 'Anna' with minor phonetic variation.
