V-PPA-ANS  |  3× in 1 sense
fitting, proper, suitable; what is appropriate or becoming in a given situation
This verb describes what is suitable, proper, or appropriate in specific contexts. Paul employs it in ethical instruction about speech that befits believers (Eph 5:4) and marital submission that is 'fitting in the Lord' (Col 3:18). In Philemon 1:8, he could command what is 'fitting' but chooses instead to appeal. The multilingual evidence (Spanish 'conveniente,' German 'geziemen') confirms this sense of propriety and appropriateness. The word carries both social and spiritual connotations of what is becoming.

Senses
1. sense 1 All three occurrences involve what is 'fitting' or 'proper' in Christian life and conduct. The Spanish translations use 'conveniente' and 'es-propio,' while German employs 'geziemen' (to befit). Paul references what is appropriate in speech (Eph 5:4), in marriage relationships (Col 3:18), and in apostolic authority (Phlm 1:8). The classical background of reaching a proper point or standard informs the NT usage of moral and relational appropriateness.
