ἀνέχω G0430
To bear with, tolerate, or endure; in the middle voice, to put up with someone or hold up patiently under hardship.
Used almost exclusively in the middle voice in the NT, ἀνέχομαι captures the posture of patient restraint — choosing to put up with what is difficult, whether a person or a circumstance. Jesus uses it memorably when he cries out 'O faithless generation, how long shall I bear with you?' (Matt 17:17; Mark 9:19; Luke 9:41), revealing divine patience strained by human unbelief. Paul likewise urges the Corinthians to 'bear with me in a little foolishness' (2 Cor 11:1), and in 2 Thess 1:4 the word shades into endurance under persecution — holding firm rather than merely tolerating.
2. endure, hold up under — A shade closer to steadfast endurance under affliction, where the emphasis shifts from tolerating persons to bearing up under hardship without giving way. Paul in 1 Cor 4:12 lists 'we endure' alongside being persecuted and reviled, and in 2 Thess 1:4 he commends the believers' patient endurance amid persecutions. The French 'supporter' covers both senses, but the multilingual glosses for this sense lack the interpersonal object that characterizes sense 1. 2×

Senses
1. bear with, tolerate — The dominant NT sense: putting up with someone or something perceived as foolish, tiresome, or disagreeable. The Spanish 'soportar' and German 'ertragen' both capture this forbearing nuance well. Jesus' triple rebuke in the Synoptics (Matt 17:17, Mark 9:19, Luke 9:41) shows divine patience with faithless disciples. Paul applies it to tolerating false teachers (2 Cor 11:4), hearing an appeal (Acts 18:14), and mutual forbearance among believers (Eph 4:2, Col 3:13). 13×
