Sustantivo sencillo que designa la arena como sustancia física, ἄμμος cobra una rica vida figurada en ambos Testamentos. Jesús contrasta edificar sobre la arena con edificar sobre la roca (Mt 7:26), convirtiendo la arena en símbolo de cimiento inestable. Pablo retoma la imagen isaiana de los descendientes de Israel tan numerosos como la arena del mar (Ro 9:27), y Hebreos la emplea igualmente para la descendencia innumerable de Abraham (Heb 11:12).
