Ἀλεξανδρινός G0222
Alexandrian, pertaining to or originating from Alexandria
This adjective describes things originating from or associated with Alexandria. Both New Testament occurrences refer to ships: in Acts 27:6, Paul and his guards board an Alexandrian ship (πλοῖον Ἀλεξανδρῖνον) sailing to Italy. In Acts 28:11, after wintering in Malta, they sail on another Alexandrian ship. These were grain ships from Egypt, part of the vital imperial grain fleet that supplied Rome with Egyptian wheat. Luke's notation of the ships' origin reflects both historical precision and the importance of Alexandrian maritime commerce in the Roman economy.
Senses
1. sense 1 — All translations preserve the geographic designation: Spanish 'alejandrino,' French 'Alexandrin.' Both references occur within Paul's voyage to Rome narrative, identifying grain ships from Alexandria. The adjective marks the ships' port of origin, reflecting Alexandria's role as the primary Mediterranean source of grain for Rome and a major hub of sea commerce. 2×
