This proper noun is the Greek transliteration of an Aramaic place name meaning "Field of Blood" (Aramaic: חקל דמא). Luke uses it in Acts 1:19 explaining the name given to the field purchased with Judas's blood money. The field became known by this grim title both because it was bought with the price of innocent blood and because Judas died there violently.
