1. cause, reason, ground — The general sense of aitia as the cause, reason, or basis for something, used in neutral or explanatory contexts without necessarily implying guilt. Jesus asks 'for what reason/cause (aitia)' a man may divorce his wife (Matt 19:3, arb sabab, spa causa, hin kaaran).
