cause, reason, ground; charge, accusation, fault
2. charge, accusation, fault The juridical sense of aitia as a formal accusation, criminal charge, or fault found in legal proceedings, predominantly in the trial narratives. Pilate finds no aitia ('fault/charge') in Jesus (John 18:38, 19:4, 19:6; eng 'fault,' arb tuhmatan, spa causa, hin dosh, kor joe-reul). The inscription over the cross states 'his charge' (Matt 27:37, eng 'charge,' arb tuhmatahu, spa acusacion, kor joemok). Mark 15:26 records the 'charge' (aitias) inscribed against him. Festus presents the charges (aitias) against Paul (Acts 25:18, 25:27; eng 'charge/charges,' arb tuhmat/tuham, spa cargos). This legal sense is distinct from the neutral 'reason' meaning by its forensic context and association with guilt or innocence.
