A field or piece of cultivated land; in the plural, the open countryside or rural area surrounding a town.
One of the most familiar words in the Gospels, appearing throughout Jesus' parables and narrative settings. A farmer sows good seed in his field (Matt 13:24), treasure lies hidden in a field (Matt 13:44), and Judas's blood money purchases the 'Field of Blood' (Acts 1:18-19). In the plural, it shifts from a specific plot to the broader countryside — the open land around towns where people tend flocks, harvest crops, or, like the prodigal son, find themselves feeding pigs (Luke 15:15). Every major European translation preserves this singular/plural distinction: campo vs. campos (spa), champ vs. campagne (fra), Acker vs. Felder (deu).

1. field, piece of land — A specific, bounded piece of land — whether cultivated, purchased, or used in parable. Jesus' parables of the sower (Matt 13:24), the hidden treasure (Matt 13:44), and the wheat and tares all center on this sense: the field as a defined tract with an owner. Spanish 'campo' and German 'Acker' consistently render the singular, emphasizing agricultural land. The 'potter's field' of Matt 27:7 and the field of Boaz (cf. 2. fields, countryside, rural area — The open countryside or rural surroundings of a settlement, typically in the plural. When Jesus tells the disciples the crowds can go 'into the fields' to buy food (Mark 6:36), or when those tending pigs flee 'into the countryside' (Mark 5:14), the word denotes unenclosed rural territory rather than a single plot.
