ἁγι-ασμός G0038
Sanctification, holiness — the process and state of being set apart for God, moral consecration
The noun ἁγιασμός (hagiasmos) denotes both the process of sanctification and its resulting state of holiness. Paul treats it as the goal of Christian life: believers are called 'for sanctification' (1 Thess 4:3, 7), and Christ himself has become our sanctification (1 Cor 1:30). Romans 6:19, 22 contrasts the fruit of sanctification with the former slavery to impurity. The author of Hebrews declares that without holiness no one will see the Lord (Heb 12:14). The term carries both positional and progressive dimensions -- the believer is set apart and is being set apart. Spanish 'santificación,' Arabic 'تَقْدِيس/قَدَاسَة,' Hindi 'पवित्रता,' Korean '거룩함.'
Senses
1. holiness — The process and resultant state of being consecrated to God, encompassing both the initial setting-apart at conversion and the ongoing moral transformation. Paul presents it as the divine will for believers (1 Thess 4:3), the fruit of liberation from sin (Rom 6:19, 22), and a gift embodied in Christ (1 Cor 1:30). Hebrews 12:14 makes it a prerequisite for seeing God. 1 Timothy 2:15 and 2 Thessalonians 2:13 confirm sanctification's role as the Spirit's work in the believer's life. Translations consistently distinguish it from mere ritual purity: Spanish 'santificación,' French 'sanctification,' German 'Heiligung.' 10×
