Desolation and Waste

(?) metapl. שַׁמּוֹת Ez 36:3 (Ges§ 67r, but v. infra);—תֵּשַׁם, etc. (v. [יָשַׁם]) are placed here by most; Ez 6:6 reads תִּישָׁ֑מְנָה, v. Ges§ 67 p dd;—Pt. שׁוֹמֵם La 3:11 (v. also Pōʿ.); f. שֹׁמֵמָ֔ה (Ges§ 84 a s) 2 S 13:20 +; pl. שׁוֹמֵמִין La 1:4, etc.;— 1. be desolated, of Tamar 2 S 13:20 (i.e. deflowered, or deserted; others appalled), of pers. elsewhere late La 1:16; נְתָנַנִי שֹׁמֵמָה v 13, שָׂמַנִ֫י שׁ׳ 3:11; pt. as n.f. בְּנֵי שׁוֹמֵמָה Is 54:1 (opp. בְּעוּלָה) [Dn 8:13 + v. II. [חָרֵב]), Ez 26:16; 27:35; 28:19; Is 52:14; Jb 17:8, cf. 1 K 9:8 = 2 Ch 7:21, Je 18:16; 19:8; 49:17; 50:13; on oneself ψ 40:16 (עַל־עֵקֶב).—Is 42:14 v. [נשׁם" dir="rtl" >נשׁם]. Niph. שְׁמָמָה55 n.f. a devastation, waste;—abs. שׁ׳ Ex 23:29 +; pl. cstr. שִׁ��ְמוֹת Je 51:26 +;—waste, usually of land, city, houses, etc., Ex 23:29 (E), Is 1:7 (prob. del., with words foll. StuJPTh. 1877, 714 FBJBL (1890), 84), Lv 26:33 (H), Je 4:27 + 14 times Je (‖ מֵאֵין אָדָם וגו׳ 32:43, מֵאֵין ישֵׁב 34:22), Ez 6:14 + 18 times Ez (35:7a read שְׁמָמָה וּמְשַׁמָּה for MT שִֽׁמְמָה וּשְׁמָמָה, so Hi Co Toy Krae al.) +; of prince, יִלְבַּשׁ שׁ׳ Ez 7:27; of idols Mi 1:7; כּוֹס שַׁמָּה וּשׁ׳ Ez 23:33.—Ez 35:12 v. שׁמם Qal.

† I. שַׁמָּה n.f. waste, appalment (24 times Je);—abs. שׁ׳ Je 5:30 +; pl. abs. שַׁמּוֹת ψ 46:9;— 1. a waste, of land, etc., ψ 46:9 Ho 5:9; Is 5:9; 13:9; 24:12; Zc 7:14; Je 2:15; 4:7; 18:16; 19:8; 46:19; 48:9; 50:3; 51:29, 43, vine Jo 1:7; pers. ψ 73:19; כּוֹס שׁ׳ וּשְׁמָמָה Ez 23:33. 2. appalment, horror, i.e. occasion of it; of people, land, etc., Dt 28:37; 2 K 22:19; Mi 6:16; Zp 2:15; Je 5:30; 25:9, 11, 18, 38; 29:18; 42:18; 44:12, 22; 49:13, 17; 50:23; 51:37, 41; 2 Ch 29:8; 30:7; שׁ׳ הֶחֱזִקָ֑תְנִי Je 8:21.

† יְשִׁימוֹן n.m. waste, wilderness;—abs. יְשִׁימוֹן 1 S 23:19 + 5 times; יְשִׁימֹן Nu 21:20 + 3 times; יְשִׁמוֹן Is 43:19; יְשִׁמֹן Dt 32:10; cstr. יְשִׁימוֹן ψ 107:4;—waste, wilderness: a. c. art., alm. n.pr. Nu 21:20 (commanded by Pisgah), 23:28 (by Peʿor; both JE), frequented by David as an outlaw 1 S 23:19, 24; 26:1, 3. Probably some part of the wilderness of Judah, bordering on Dead Sea (ConderTent Work, ch. 15; BuhlGeogr. § 61); according to others, at least in Nu. (v. Di), part of the ʿArábah NE. of the Dead Sea (in which was בֵּית הַיְשִׁימֹת Nu 33:49 al.) b. without art., a waste or wilderness (only poet.), of scene of Israel’s wanderings (after the Exodus), בְּתֹהוּ יְלֵל יְשׁ׳ Dt 32:10 (‖ בְּאֶרֶץ מִדְבָּר), ψ 68:8; 78:40; 106:14; with ref. to returning exiles Is 43:19, 20; בִּי׳דֶּרֶךְ ψ 107:4 in the waste (desert) a way (cf. 𝔊 𝔖).

† I. שְׁפִי n.m. bareness, smooth or bare (treeless) height;— 1. bareness, Jb 33:21 Kt (v. √). 2. bare place, height: שֶׁ֑פִי Nu 23:3 (E), i.e. an outlook-point; pl. שְׁפָיִים Is 41:18; 49:9; Je 3:21, שְׁפָיִם 3:2; 4:11 (‖ מִדְבָּר), 7:29, 12:12 (בַּמִּדְבָּר), 14:6.

† מְשַׁמָּה n.f. = שַׁמָּה;—abs. 1. = devastation, waste, וְנָתַתִּי אֶת־הָאָרֶץ שְׁמָמָה וּמ׳ Ez 6:14; 33:28, cf. v 29 35:3, + 35:7a, v. שְׁמָמָה" dir="rtl" >שְׁמָמָה; pl. מְשַׁמּוֹת Is 15:6 = Je 48:34. 2. horror, וְהָֽיְתָה חֶרְפָּה … וּמ׳ Ez 5:15.

† שָׁמֵם adj. devastated;—שׁ׳ of sanctuary Dn 9:17; f. שְׁמֵמָה of land Je 12:11.

† מְשׁוֹאָה, מְשֹׁאָה n.f. desolation;— 1. sg. only in שֹׁאָה וּמ׳ Zp 1:15; Jb 30:3; 38:27, v. above; 2. pl. (מַשּׁוּאוֹת, read) מְשׁוֹאוֹת, so Klo Hup-Now CheComm. Bae Du ψ 74:3 ruins (of temple) and 73:18 ruins (of one’s life, fig.; but Du here der.from נשׁא: deceptions, v. p. 674; yet cf. synon. שַׁמָּה v 19).

† בָּתָה n.f. end, destruction (for בַּתָּה, perhaps on account of difference of meaning, perhaps from analogy of כָּלָה with like sense; cf. Di)—וַאֲשִׁיתֵהוּ בָתָה Is 5:6 and I will make it (the vineyard) a destruction, a waste, or (Che) make an end of it.

† [יְשִׁימָה] n.f. desolation, only intens. pl. יְשִׁימוֹת ψ 55:16 Kt (Qr יַשִּׁיא מָוֶת), so Ges Hup al., cf. n.pr.loc. בית הישׁימות supr. p. 111 b; 𝔊 Ew Ol Pe De al. follow Qr, let death come deceitfully upon them, v. ii. נשׁא.
