Tekoa, a town in the Judean hills south of Bethlehem, home of the wise woman and the prophet Amos.
Tekoa was a hilltop settlement roughly five miles south of Bethlehem, overlooking the wilderness that bore its name. It is best known as the hometown of the prophet Amos (Amos 1:1) and the unnamed wise woman whom Joab enlisted to persuade David to recall Absalom (2 Sam 14:2). Rehoboam fortified it as part of Judah's defensive network (2 Chr 11:6), and Jehoshaphat's army assembled in the wilderness of Tekoa before the miraculous defeat of Moab and Ammon (2 Chr 20:20).

Senses
1. Tekoa (place name) The proper noun referring to the Judean town of Tekoa (modern Khirbet Tequ'a). All seven occurrences designate the same location. The genealogical notices in 1 Chronicles 2:24 and 4:5 personify the town as a 'son' of Ashhur, reflecting the common biblical idiom of ancestor-as-city-founder. German 'von Tekoa' and Spanish 'Tecoa' preserve the toponym with minor phonetic adaptation, while French and German occasionally leave the Hebrew untransliterated, underscoring how proper nouns can resist translation across languages.
