The tip or lobe of the ear; a technical priestly term used exclusively in consecration and purification rituals involving the application of blood or oil.
A specialized anatomical term referring to the soft, fleshy lobe at the bottom of the outer ear. It appears exclusively in ritual contexts within the Priestly source, always in the construct phrase tenukh ozen ('lobe of the ear of...'). During the consecration of Aaron and his sons, Moses applied sacrificial blood to the lobe of the right ear, the right thumb, and the right big toe (Exod 29:20; Lev 8:23-24). The identical triad of body parts receives blood and oil in the purification ritual for a healed leper (Lev 14:14, 17, 25, 28). The Septuagint renders it lobos tou otos ('lobe of the ear'), and the Vulgate extremum auriculae ('tip of the ear'), confirming the ancient understanding.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A masculine noun denoting the tip or lobe of the ear, used only in the fixed construct phrase tenukh ozen ('lobe of the ear of') in priestly ritual legislation. All eight occurrences fall within two parallel ceremonies: the ordination of priests (Exod 29:20; Lev 8:23-24), where sacrificial blood is dabbed on the right ear lobe, right thumb, and right great toe; and the cleansing of a healed skin-disease sufferer (Lev 14:14, 17, 25, 28), where both blood and oil are applied to the same three points. The ear-hand-foot triad symbolizes the consecration of the whole person—hearing, action, and walk—to God's service. The multilingual evidence is strikingly uniform: English 'lobe of,' Spanish 'lóbulo de,' French 'lobe de,' German 'Lobe von,' all transliterating or calquing the same anatomical term. 8×
