Timnah — a Canaanite town in the Shephelah, associated with Judah's encounter with Tamar and Samson's Philistine wife
Timnah (תִּמְנָה) is a town in the Shephelah lowlands on the border between Judah and Philistia. It first appears when Judah goes up to Timnah for sheep-shearing and encounters Tamar at the roadside (Gen 38:12-14). Joshua lists it among Judah's towns (Josh 15:10, 57) and also as a Danite city (Josh 19:43). Its most vivid role is in the Samson cycle: Samson goes down to Timnah, sees a Philistine woman, and insists on marrying her (Judg 14:1-5). The Philistines capture it during Ahaz's reign (2 Chr 28:18). The site is identified with Tel Batash in the Sorek Valley. Spanish 'Timna' transliterates the name.

1. Timnah (place name) — A Canaanite town in the Shephelah borderland between Judah and Philistia, identified with Tel Batash in the Sorek Valley. Judah travels there for sheep-shearing and encounters Tamar (Gen 38:12-14). Listed in the tribal allotments of both Judah (Josh 15:10, 57) and Dan (Josh 19:43), reflecting its contested border location. Samson goes down to Timnah to take a Philistine wife, initiating his career of conflict (Judg 14:1-2, 5). The Philistines capture it during Ahaz's reign (2 Chr 28:18). Its position on the Judah-Philistia frontier made it a perennial flashpoint. Spanish 'Timna' and English 'Timnah' both transliterate the Hebrew directly. 12×
