Thebez (place name: town near Shechem, site of Abimelech's death)
Thebez was a fortified town near Shechem, famous as the place where Abimelech met his inglorious end. Judges 9:50 reports Abimelech besieged Thebez, but when he approached the tower to burn it, a woman dropped a millstone on his head, fracturing his skull. He ordered his armor-bearer to kill him lest it be said a woman slew him. 2 Samuel 11:21 refers back to this incident rhetorically: 'Who killed Abimelech? Didn't a woman throw a millstone on him from the wall at Thebez?' The site is identified with modern Tubas, about four hours north of Shechem.
