Sharuhen (place name: city in Simeon's territory)
Sharuhen was a city allotted to the tribe of Simeon within Judah's territory, mentioned in the boundary descriptions of Joshua 19. The location is uncertain, though some scholars identify it with an Egyptian site name Sha-ru-ha-na. The Septuagint's unusual rendering ('their fields') may reflect textual confusion or an alternative reading. Like many Simeonite settlements, Sharuhen was located in the Negev region of southern Judah. The city represents one of the towns Simeon inherited when their tribal allotment was carved from Judah's portion, since 'Judah's portion was too large for them.'
