Detestable thing or abomination; an idol, idolatrous practice, or defiling filth loathsome before God
Shiqquts (from the root shaqats, 'to detest') is one of the Hebrew Bible's strongest terms of revulsion, deployed almost exclusively against idolatry. Prophets hurl it at the totality of Israel's idol-worship (Jer 4:1; Ezek 5:11; 7:20; 11:18), while the historical books name specific 'abominations' like Chemosh of Moab and Milcom of Ammon (1 Kgs 11:5, 7; 2 Kgs 23:13). Daniel's 'abomination of desolation' (Dan 11:31; 12:11) became a key apocalyptic phrase echoed by Jesus. Nahum extends the word beyond idolatry to raw filth cast upon Nineveh (Nah 3:6).

Senses
1. detestable things, idolatrous abominations Detestable things or idolatrous abominations collectively -- the plural shiqqutsim denouncing the whole apparatus of a nation's idol worship. Ezekiel uses it repeatedly (5:11; 7:20; 11:18, 21; 20:7-8, 30; 37:23), as do Jeremiah (4:1; 7:30; 13:27; 16:18) and the Deuteronomistic historians (Deut 29:17; 2 Kgs 23:24). Spanish 'abominaciones' and German 'Abscheuliches' convey the visceral disgust. 20×

2. detestable idol, abomination A specific detestable idol or deity singled out by name or epithet: 'Ashtoreth the shiqquts of the Sidonians,' 'Chemosh the shiqquts of Moab' (1 Kgs 11:5, 7; 2 Kgs 23:13). Daniel's 'shiqquts meshomem' -- the abomination that causes desolation (Dan 11:31; 12:11) -- became theologically pivotal, referenced by Jesus in Matthew 24:15. The construct form emphasizes a particular loathsome object rather than idolatry in general.

3. filth, unclean thing Filth or defiling matter emphasizing pollution and disgust rather than specifically idolatrous content. Nahum 3:6 declares God will cast 'filth' (shiqquts) upon Nineveh, and Zechariah 9:7 applies it to unclean food. French 'abomination' and Spanish 'inmundicias' (filth) capture this broader connotation of contaminating repulsiveness.
