Shiloh — the Israelite cultic center in Ephraim where the tabernacle stood from the conquest to the early monarchy
Shiloh is the proper name of the town in the hill country of Ephraim (modern Khirbet Seilun, roughly 30 km north of Jerusalem) that served as Israel's central sanctuary from the days of Joshua through the early career of Samuel. All 32 occurrences point to this single sacred site. Joshua established the Tent of Meeting there after the initial conquest (Josh 18:1), and the remaining tribal allotments were distributed from Shiloh (Josh 18:8-10; 19:51). It was the home of the young Samuel and the house of Eli (1 Sam 1:3-9; 3:21), and the site from which the ark was disastrously carried into battle against the Philistines (1 Sam 4:3-4). After that defeat, Shiloh evidently fell — a catastrophe Jeremiah invokes as a solemn warning to Jerusalem: 'Go now to my place that was in Shiloh... and see what I did to it' (Jer 7:12-14; 26:6-9). Psalm 78:60 remembers the abandonment of the mishkan at Shiloh. The spelling alternates between Shiloh, Shilo, and Shiloh in the Masoretic text.

Senses
1. Shiloh (place name) The proper name of Israel's central cultic site in Ephraim, home of the tabernacle from Joshua through early Samuel. Joshua stationed the Tent of Meeting there (Josh 18:1) and allocated tribal territories from it (Josh 18:8-10; 19:51). Samuel grew up at Shiloh under Eli (1 Sam 1:3-9; 3:21), and the ark was taken from there to battle (1 Sam 4:3-4). Its destruction became Jeremiah's warning to Jerusalem (Jer 7:12-14; 26:6-9); Psalm 78:60 laments God's abandoning the mishkan at Shiloh. 32×
