Susa (Shushan), the ancient capital of Elam and winter residence of the Persian kings
The proper name of the fortified city in southwestern Persia where much of the book of Esther unfolds and where Nehemiah served as cupbearer. Often qualified as 'Shushan the citadel' (Neh 1:1; Esth 1:2; Dan 8:2), it was the administrative seat of Achaemenid power. Esther's entire drama—from her selection as queen through the decree of Purim—plays out within and around this city (Esth 2:3–8; 3:15; 4:8, 16; 8:14–15; 9:6–18). French 'Suse,' Spanish 'Susa,' and German 'Susa' all preserve the place name with minimal variation.
