N-fsc  |  11× in 1 sense
A cry for help or outcry of distress, directed toward God in lament and arising from oppression
A feminine noun expressing the raw, anguished appeal of the desperate — whether an individual in the Psalms or an entire people in bondage. Israel's cry (shav'ah) rises from Egyptian slavery and reaches God's ears (Exod 2:23). David, fleeing for his life, declares that his cry came before God and entered his ears (2 Sam 22:7; Ps 18:6). Across the Psalter, this word appears in some of the most intimate pleas for divine attention — 'let my cry come before you' (Ps 102:1), 'he does not despise the cry of the afflicted' (Ps 34:15). It is the vocabulary of last resort, the sound of those who have nowhere else to turn.

Senses
1. cry for help, outcry A cry for help or outcry of distress directed to God, expressing anguished appeal in times of suffering or oppression. Appears in the exodus narrative where Israel's collective groan reaches God (Exod 2:23), in royal thanksgiving where David recalls his cry entering God's ears (2 Sam 22:7; Ps 18:6), and throughout individual laments (Ps 34:15; 39:13; 40:2; 72:12; 88:3; 102:1). Jehoshaphat invokes it in communal prayer before battle (2 Chr 20:9). Translations converge uniformly: Spanish 'clamor,' Arabic صُرَاخ/صَرْخَة (surakh/sarkha), Korean 부르짖음 (bureujijeum), Hindi पुकार (pukar), Swahili 'kilio' — all confirming a single sense of desperate vocal appeal. 11×
