N-ms  |  13× in 1 sense
Field, open land; a poetic form of שָׂדֶה denoting cultivated ground, wild terrain, or land broadly.
A rare, archaic, and exclusively poetic form of the common noun שָׂדֶה ('field'). It appears in elevated contexts: Moses' song celebrates honey from the rock and oil from the flinty field (Deut 32:13), psalmists praise all that the field contains (Ps 96:12), and prophets use it for cultivated land (Hos 10:4) and open country where wild beasts roam (Isa 56:9; Ps 50:11; 80:14; 104:11). French sometimes confuses it with שַׁדַּי ('Almighty') due to identical consonants, but Spanish campo and German Feld correctly identify the agricultural and geographical sense. Jeremiah 4:17 uses it memorably: 'like keepers of a field they surround her.'

Senses
1. field (open land, cultivated ground) Open land or countryside, used in poetry as an archaic variant of שָׂדֶה. Encompasses cultivated ground yielding food (Deut 32:13; Hos 10:4; Lam 4:9), the wild habitat of beasts (בְּהֵמוֹת שָׂדַי, Ps 8:8; Joel 2:22; חַיְתוֹ שָׂדַי, Isa 56:9; Ps 104:11), and broad terrain set in parallel with sea and world (Ps 96:12, cf. 98:7). Jeremiah 18:14 may use it for 'plain' as opposed to mountain. Spanish campo and German Feld capture the concrete geographical referent, while French Tout-Puissant in some renderings reflects a common confusion with the divine name שַׁדַּי. 13×
