Remnant, remainder; the surviving portion of a people after judgment, or what is left over of things.
Denotes what survives or remains after loss, destruction, or division. In prophetic literature, it carries enormous theological weight: the she'erith of Israel is the faithful core that endures exile and judgment to become the seed of future restoration. Micah promises that 'the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations' (Mic 5:7), while Jeremiah warns that even the remnant of Judah who fled to Egypt will perish (Jer 44:28). Beyond its dominant use for surviving people, the word occasionally describes leftover material -- the rest of a piece of wood from which an idol was carved (Isa 44:17).

Senses
1. remnant of a people The surviving portion of a people or nation after calamity. This theologically loaded sense accounts for nearly all occurrences, appearing across the prophets as a motif of both judgment and hope. Translations uniformly employ 'remnant' language -- Spanish remanente-de, French reste, German Rest -- signaling a recognized technical term. Joseph tells his brothers that God sent him ahead to preserve a she'erith on earth (Gen 45:7). Isaiah and Jeremiah use it for the survivors of exile (2 Kgs 19:31; Jer 40:11), while Amos and Zephaniah warn that judgment may leave no remnant at all. 64×

2. remainder of things The remaining portion of non-personal things or material. In Isaiah 44:17, a man burns part of a log for cooking and with the she'erith ('rest of it') carves an idol -- a biting irony. In Jeremiah 15:9, the mother of seven breathes her last and her 'remnant' (her remaining life force or offspring) is given to the sword. Spanish y-resto-su and German und-Rest match the English 'rest of it,' treating the word as a simple quantitative remainder rather than a theological survivor.
