H7328 H7328
A secret or mystery, especially a divine secret revealed through prophetic vision or interpretation (Aramaic, used only in Daniel).
An Aramaic loanword from Persian, used exclusively in the book of Daniel to describe secrets that belong to God alone but which he graciously discloses to his servants. When Nebuchadnezzar demands both dream and interpretation, Daniel appeals to the 'God of heaven' who reveals mysteries (Dan 2:28). The multilingual evidence is strikingly unified: English 'mystery,' Spanish 'misterio,' and German 'Geheimnis' all converge on the same core meaning. This term became foundational for later apocalyptic and rabbinic vocabulary about divine disclosure.
Senses
1. mystery, secret — A divine mystery or hidden secret, particularly one accessible only through God's revelation. All nine occurrences appear in Daniel 2 and 4, centering on Nebuchadnezzar's dream and the heavenly court's willingness to unveil what human wisdom cannot penetrate. The singular emphasizes a specific hidden matter (Dan 2:18, 2:27, 4:6), while the plural encompasses multiple divine secrets (Dan 2:28-29, 2:47). Translations across languages—English 'mystery,' Spanish 'misterio,' German 'Geheimnis'—uniformly point to concealed knowledge that requires supernatural disclosure. 9×
