Nobles, grandees, lords; an Aramaic court title for high-ranking officials in the Babylonian-Persian empire.
An Aramaic noun formed by reduplication of rav ('great'), intensifying it to mean 'the very great ones' -- nobles or grandees of the royal court. It appears exclusively in Daniel 4-6, describing the courtiers of Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 4:36), the thousand nobles at Belshazzar's feast (Dan 5:1-3, 9-10, 23), and the officials under Darius (Dan 6:17). The word captures the opulence and hierarchical structure of the imperial Babylonian and Persian courts. Spanish 'nobles,' French 'noble,' and German 'Grossen' all render the high social rank, while the reduplicative form itself signals emphatic grandeur.
Senses
1. nobles, grandees (Aramaic court title) — Nobles, grandees, or lords of the royal court -- an Aramaic intensified reduplicative form from rav ('great'), denoting the highest-ranking officials in the Babylonian and Persian imperial hierarchy. Used exclusively in Daniel: Nebuchadnezzar's nobles return to him after his restoration (Dan 4:36), Belshazzar feasts with a thousand of his grandees (Dan 5:1), and Darius's lords are present at key moments (Dan 6:17). The plural suffix forms (ravrvanai 'my nobles,' ravrvanohiy 'his nobles') reflect the possessive relationship between monarch and court. Spanish 'nobles' and German 'Grossen' consistently capture the elevated social rank. 9×
