Rav (II), distinct from the common adjective rav meaning 'great' or 'many,' is a loanword reflecting Akkadian bureaucratic titles. All 28 occurrences function as the first element of compound official designations, almost exclusively for Babylonian officers. The most frequent is rav-tabbachim, 'chief of the executioners' or 'captain of the guard,' the title borne by Nebuzaradan, who oversaw the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC and the deportation of its inhabitants (2 Kgs 25:8-20; Jer 39:9-13; 40:1-5; 52:12-30). Other compounds include rav-saris, 'chief eunuch,' the officer charged with training Daniel and his companions (Dan 1:3), and rav-chovel, 'chief sailor' or 'captain,' used of the ship's master in the Jonah narrative (Jon 1:6). Esther 1:8 uses it generically for 'every chief of his house.' The LXX transliterates or renders it archon, and all target languages gloss it as a leadership title: Spanish 'jefe,' French 'chef,' German 'Oberste.'
