N-fsc  |  8× in 1 sense
Floor, ground surface, bottom; the flat base of a building (temple, tabernacle) or the floor of the sea.
A noun likely derived by reduplication from the root qrr or qur, qarqa' denotes the floor or ground-level surface of a structure. It appears most prominently in the description of Solomon's temple, where the floor is overlaid with gold (1 Kgs 6:15, 16, 30), and in the tabernacle ritual of Numbers 5:17, where dust is taken from the floor. Amos 9:3 extends the image dramatically to the 'floor of the sea' -- the ocean bottom where fugitives might hide from God. German 'Boden' and French 'plancher' both capture the sense of a horizontal base surface.

Senses
1. floor, bottom (of a building or container) The floor or bottom surface of a structure or space. Used concretely for the temple floor overlaid with gold (1 Kgs 6:15, 16, 30), for the tabernacle floor from which dust is gathered for the ordeal of jealousy (Num 5:17), and extended metaphorically to the 'floor of the sea' -- the ocean bottom (Amos 9:3). French 'plancher,' German 'Boden,' and English 'floor' all reflect the same concrete image of a flat, horizontal base surface. The word is likely a reduplicative formation from the root qrr, cognate with Akkadian qaqqaru ('ground, earth').
