Form, shape, or architectural pattern; the visible design or structure of something, especially a building or plan.
Refers to the visible form, shape, or design of a structure. Nearly all of its occurrences cluster in Ezekiel's grand temple vision (Ezek 43:11), where God commands the prophet to show Israel the tsurat ('form') of the temple so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities and study its pattern. The one occurrence outside Ezekiel appears in Psalm 49:14, where it describes the 'form' of the dead wasting away in Sheol. Spanish 'forma' and English 'form' both capture the core meaning, though the architectural specificity in Ezekiel gives the word a technical flavor beyond mere 'appearance.'
Senses
1. form, pattern, design — The visible form, pattern, or architectural design of a structure or entity. Used almost exclusively in Ezekiel 43:11, where the prophet is commanded to describe the temple's form (tsurat) to Israel — its exits, entrances, regulations, and entire layout. The multilingual glosses converge tightly: English 'form-of,' Spanish 'forma-de,' and French 'forme' all point to a concrete, describable design. In Psalm 49:14, the same word shifts from architectural blueprint to bodily form, describing how death consumes the shape of the wicked in Sheol. 6×
