Paroketh denotes the great curtain that divided the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (the Holy of Holies) in the wilderness tabernacle and, later, in the Jerusalem temple. All 25 occurrences belong to sacral architecture, and the word appears almost exclusively in Priestly legislation within Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. The veil was woven from blue, purple, and scarlet yarn with fine linen, decorated with cherubim — skilled artistic work of the highest order (Exod 26:31). It hung on four gold-covered acacia pillars and served as the ultimate boundary between the accessible and the unapproachable: only the high priest could pass beyond it, once a year on the Day of Atonement. The phrase paroketh hammasakh ('the veil of the screen,' Exod 35:12; 39:34; 40:21) and paroketh haqqodesh ('the veil of the sanctuary,' Lev 4:6) reinforce its role as the definitive sacred barrier. In the temple, 2 Chronicles 3:14 records Solomon's veil. Spanish 'velo,' French 'voile,' and German 'Vorhang' all capture its function as a concealing hanging.
